Your Screwfix Flooring purchase is a long term investment, that will give you many years of enjoyable and practical use. The following recommendations will ensure that your floor continues to look good throughout its decorative life.
- Ensure that furniture legs have large surface, non-staining floor protectors attached. Replace small, narrow metal or dome shaped feet with smooth flat glides that are flat in contact with the floor. These glides are best when equipped with self adhesive felt pads that help avoid scratching the surface of your new floor. Felt pads can be purchased from Screwfix Flooring or any good furniture store. Check these pads for grit and wear on a regular basis, and replace when necessary.
- Heavy furniture or appliances that are not moved on a regular basis should be equipped with flat, non-staining furniture castors or cups of an appropriate size.
- Mobile appliances should be equipped with easily swivelling castors. These should be of a hard rubber construction, avoiding metal, ball shaped castors.
- Place mats outside entrances to prevent grit and dirt from being tracked onto your floor. Wipe off matting or barrier matting should be used inside to remove all wet soiling and residual grit. These should be cleaned regularly to prevent build up of damaging particles. Ensure that the backing on these mats is suitable, as some rubber mats may cause discolouration.
- Curtains and blinds in very heavy sunlight areas, such as conservatories and patio doors will help reduce the potential for fading your furniture as well as protecting your floor, during very intense periods of sunlight.
- Avoid wearing stiletto or spiked heels on your floor, these types of shoes can damage some types of flooring.
- Heat producing appliances, cigarettes and matches may damage some types of smooth flooring when allowed to come into contact with the floor surface for a period of time.
Regular Care and Maintenance
- Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and grit, that can abrade, dull and scratch your floor. Avoid the use of beater brush vacuums, as these may damage your floor.
- Wipe up spills promptly with a damp cloth or well wrung out mop.
- Cleaning your floor should be undertaken with careful consideration to the manufacturers instructions. For example the use of water on a laminate floor should be kept to a minimum, whilst vinyl and Duraceramic products can withstand full wet cleaning. In all circumstances you should not allow residual water to be left standing on any smooth floor.
- Some of our products should be maintained with polishes and glossing agents, for full cleaning advice contact the office or refer to the product instructions. If in doubt please contact us for advice.
By operating a regular maintenance procedure, the good looks of the floor are optimised, as well as ensuring a healthy living environment.
Temperature and Humidity
For wood based products it is essential that the temperature and humidity is kept as regular as possible. The ideal levels of humidity should be 50-65%rH at a temperature of between 20-23 degrees centigrade. This climate is ideal for good health as well as stable wooden floors. It is recommended that a humidity gauge is used to monitor humidity and room temperature.
